A question I get asked all the time is this: what the heck is a sercy??
It’s a great question because the word can mean a lot of things, from the Game of Thrones character to the Greek goddess, to acts of kindness – but more on all this in a minute!
A Sercy is a Surprise Gift
A Sercy is an unexpected gift, gesture, token of gratitude or act of service to show someone you appreciate them. A sercy is a gift “just because.” Say you are out in the world and you see a pretty candle or bar of soap or something that instantly reminds you of a friend, client or loved one. You buy it and give it to them as a happy surprise gift – a sercy! It’s a way of saying, I saw this and it reminded me of you, or hey, thanks for being my friend!
A sercy is also a perfect gesture to give clients and acquaintances to show gratitude and make them feel special. If you’re an interior designer, a sercy that matches the decor of your client’s home is a perfect way to thank them for working with you! Or say you’re a busy mom with young children. Sercies like our Virginia Cocktail Peanuts are a great way to thank a hostess, neighbor, or your child’s teacher for what they do.
Why Have I Never Heard of Sercies?
The word “sercy” comes from the southern part of the United States, and is sometimes spelled searcy, surcie, or cerci. While acts of kindness, tokens of appreciation and spontaneous gifts are part of many different cultures, in the south we call them “sercies.”
In my family, growing up in North Carolina, we did this for each other all the time. The person that most frequently does this for people is my mom, Heather. When my siblings and I were growing up, she would give us funny little toys or a popsicle as sercies. As we got older, the sercies evolved with us. The most recent sercy she gave me was a jar of marinara sauce from a vendor at a farmer’s market in our hometown.
Seeing our mom do this our whole lives inspired me and my siblings to give sercies to the people in our lives. My friend Tabitha and I now exchange a sercy whenever we visit each other- and we have a thing for fun wine glasses. My sister makes bracelets for her friends with little sayings on them, so they are customized and personal. My brother has put his own spin on sercies and often does acts of kindness instead of giving gifts.
So Many Sercy Spellings!
A question I get a lot is, “Wait, Cercei as in Game of Thrones?” While I do love Game of Thrones (Long Live the Queen in the North!) Cercei Lannister is not quite what we are going for.
Another common misunderstanding is Circe, the Greek goddess of magic, most famously known for her role in the Odyssey. We love powerful mythological women, but Circe is not the southern surprise gift.
Why Sercy? Kindness is our Mission
These sercies – small gestures of kindness – are a simple way to show someone that you care about them. My mom and I have taken that meaning and expanded it to embody kindness and gratitude as a way of living. Our mission is to spread kindness one gift at a time. We want sercy to be a household word that is synonymous with kindness.
In a world that is busy and can feel disconnected, we could all use more kindness. In fact, science has proven that being kind to others can actually make you happier. “Numerous studies have shown that receiving, giving, or even witnessing acts of kindness increases immunity and the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood in the brain” (source).
My mom and I have been fortunate to be supported by kind and generous people all our lives. We want people at all ages and stages learn that being kind is cool — and it starts with you!
Kindness also has the power to heal communities. That’s why a portion of purchase you make on this website is donated to the Kind Campaign, “an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that brings awareness and healing to the negative and lasting effects of girl-against-girl bullying through their global movement, documentary film, in-school assemblies, and educational curriculums.”
We carefully pick each gift on our website to reflect our mission to spread kindness one gift at a time. Everything from candles and soaps to spices and jewelry is chosen with kindness in mind.
Sercy’s guiding principles include celebrating the amazing and talented small, local businesses and artisans. All of our Sercy partners are located in the U.S. Many of them are “one-man” or “one-woman” bands. Others began between best friends and have grown to employ 8-10 people. These companies are the backbone of Sercy. Our goal is to introduce our customers to unique and curated gifts that have a kind meaning and story behind them.
Each of our vendors are K.I.N.D.:
- K = Kindred → Since our mission to spread kindness is so vital to Sercy, we want our vendors to be kindred spirits in our mission!
- I = Interesting → We want fun and unique products that will be special and surprising, and unlike what you can buy at a big chain store. We only sell gifts that we would buy ourselves!
- N = National → All of our products are made in the U.S. Heather and I aim to highlight the amazing small businesses and artisans in the nation!
- D = Donate → When you purchase a sercy from our website you spread kindness to your loved ones with your gift. But you also help people all over learn the importance of treating one another with kindness and respect.
What the world needs most is what is least expects … KINDNESS!
Sercy is a curated online gift store that spreads kindness, one gift at a time! We help thoughtful people like you find the perfect gift. A portion of all Sercy sales are donated to The Kind Campaign, a nonprofit that offers awareness and healing of girl-on-girl bullying.
